Regulation Of NHS Managers – Government Consultation

I’ve previously written about my view that one of the few areas where we need more regulation relates to NHS managers. Today, DHSC opened a consultation on its proposal to indeed start a system of NHS manager regulation.

DHSC’s current position is that the regulatory system will apply to at least:
~ Board level directors in NHS organisations in England
~ Arm’s length body board level directors
~ Integrated care board members.

It is also proposed that any requirements put in place for NHS managers will cover the values, behaviours and competencies that managers will be expected to demonstrate, alongside obligations pertaining to duty of candour and duty to respond to patient safety incidents.

In terms of the system of regulation, DHSC is open to everything from a voluntary accreditation register (e.g. British Psychological Society) through to full statutory registration and revalidation mechanisms (e.g. General Medical Council).

This is a potentially seismic change in the NHS landscape and may even apply to private sector providers too (another consultation question). The consultation will remain open until 18 February 2025 and can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/epmkQXpn
